What appears to be simple is often the hardest and most complicated. Just ask Italian architect Paolo Gianfrancesco, who designed a summer house on Iceland disguised as a barn. The simple for was a necessity. Previously, there was a barn on the site and new building must, according to custom, relate to the site. The summer house is situated in an environmentally-protected area in Vestfjördur, one of the most isolated parts of Iceland. It is only accessible by water and, to make matters even more complicated, during limited parts of the year. So that the Reykjavík-based Italian architect consequently came to design a house built of wood modules, sufficiently small and light to be able to be transported in a small, open boat. Start of construction: soon. Completion: not quite so soon.
